80 YEARS OF SERVICE AS AYURVEDIC DOCTOR |
||||||||
|
At 99, Appukkuttan Vaidyan, Eranad, Malappuram is still active as a traditional ayurvedic doctor. Once known only in the remote villages of Eranad, his fame has now crossed the borders of the State. He
started learning medicine from his father at the age of 12.
By the time of his father’s death when he was 28, he had been
established as a doctor. From then onwards it has been a life dedicated to the
traditions of ayurveda. He is
the custodian of rare palm leaf manuscripts and books on medicine. Although some part of his collection has been lost due to the
ravages of time, he keeps the rest as a priceless treasure. 2
sons among his 9 children follow their father’s footsteps as doctors. Although
he is sad at the hypocrisy and violence in society, he goes on with his
service of providing solace to the sick in body.
