HOME FOR THE POOR, ORPHANS AND THE HANDICAPPED |
||||||||
|
Just
as the inmates of Balavihar try to adjust to life with their available
physical and mental abilities, the office bearers of the home are trying
to run it with available resources at their command.
The 9 member volunteer team led by Secretary D.Sarojam collects
food from wedding halls and hotels and go from door to door in search of
cloths for the children. Balavihar,
Kannaravila, near Nellimood, Thiruvananthapuram is a home for
physically and mentally handicapped. It started functioning as a charitable society 10 years ago.
The home now has 21 inmates, of whom 3 are orphans and the rest
from very poor families. In
addition to providing free food and accommodation, the home trains them to
expand their possibilities. The
Balavihar runs on the kind gesture of philanthropists and voluntary
organizations. The poor
parents, when they visit the children, bring something in cash or kind.
But that is hardly sufficient to make both ends meet. Even
in the midst of such routine difficulties, the volunteers are prepared to
serve more such poor, orphaned and handicapped children.
