If Jose Kallookkaran had set his eyes on a compassionate gesture from the Government towards the handicapped, he would have probably ended up running a telephone booth near his house at Church Road, Kuriachira, Thrissur.

But he chose something different.  And with determination surmounted his physical inability of polio-stricken legs to register as an advocate.

From the age of 1½ to 4, he underwent allopathic treatment and later switched over to ayurveda.  It was ayurveda that helped him improve at least this much, says his father Laser.

With his available faculties, Jose joined Model Boys High School, Thrissur.  He later completed Pre Degree and B.Com from St.Thomas College before joined Government Law College, Thrissur.  After completing the studies in 1997 he was working in Head Load Workers’ Welfare Board in addition to being an office bearer in handicapped persons’ associations.

But he was still hesitant to enroll as an advocate.  The encouragement from Adv.Gowrisankar of Palakkad, himself a handicapped and the Director of State Handicapped Persons’ Welfare Corporation, Adv. Abdulla Sona finally resulted in his decision to put on the black gown.

“If a man with one hand can do equally well what another man does with both hands, then the first person should be considered more able, not disabled,” he says.  “Although they are able, the disabled do not get opportunities.  One of my aims is to do something for such people.”
