While parents elsewhere run from pillar to post to get their children admitted in English medium schools, here is a place where the reverse migration is taking place.

Government Vocational Higher Secondary School, Vattenad, Palakkad admitted this year 40 students in class 8, 15 in class 9 and 5 in class 10 – most of them on transfer from English medium CBSE schools.

The students and their parents point out 3 reasons for the migration: one, the heavy academic load in CBSE syllabus, two, the heavy burden of fees in such schools and three, desire to learn in mother tongue.

But that alone cannot account for the attraction of this particular school.  After all there are Malayalam medium schools galore everywhere.

The strength of the school is the united effort of its teachers led by Principal T.K.Balan.  The academic year begins in May itself.  Weak students are given extra coaching through study centers conducted in the 3rd term with people’s participation.

The school has around 3000 students and classes are conducted in 2 shifts.  From class 5 onwards, each class brings out manuscript magazine.  For the last 2 years the school has been bringing out a little magazine, ‘Akam’ also.

‘Akam’ is full of campus news and creative contributions from students.  Students themselves do the layout and editing as well as canvassing of advertisement for the magazine.  They get full support from the teachers for these activities.
