THE LONGEST LETTER

At a time when information is being exchanged in kilobytes, here is someone who does it in ‘kilograms’.  Regan Johns of Vandiperiyar, Idukki has accomplished the daunting task of writing the longest - and perhaps the heaviest - letter in the world.  His epistle, addressed to the Pope, has a length of 2.5 km, a width of 2.5 ft and weighs a whopping 100kg.  It contains 100 million English words.

Writing at the rate of 10 hours per day, it took Johns 4 years to complete this message of peace.

The Wall Street Journal of USA and Omni magazine editor Peter Tyson have together put the worth of the letter at $10 million.  The Limca Book of World Records too estimates the worth of the letter in the same range.  At the request of Guinness Book of World Records, Regan Johns has sent documentation relating to the letter to them.

Once the letter was ready, he couriered it to Chennai from where it was despatched to Rome aboard an Italian Airlines plane.

The letter is now showcased for public viewing at Vatican.

And Regan Johns has a bigger dream to publish a still heavier tome whose weight would come in the range of tons.
