WHEN A MUSLIM YOUTH DANCES IN TEMPLE COURTYARDS

Harish Ali of Edappal, Malappuram

When Harish Ali of Edappal, Malappuram dances in temple courtyards, it certainly adds to the amity of religions.  For this youth is a devotee of dance whose favourite item is ‘Sivathandava’.

Ali was hooked onto dance while studying in school.  In his enthusiasm he learned Bharathanatyam, Kutchippudi and Mohiniattam.  Afterwards, when he was invited to perform in temples, he was quite thrilled.  Although he had to face stiff resistance from conservatives on both sides, in the end they all had to bow before his determination.

Besides, his relatives and friends always stood by him.  Thus his dance has been performed at Guruvayoor temple, Sukapuram Kulangara temple and Kadavallur temple.

His guru is Annakkappaadu Balan Master.  Ali learned dancing at the Sruti Dance and Art Centre of the master.

From childhood he was interested in sports also.  He has a black belt in kick-boxing.  Besides, he runs a gymnasium at Edappal.

Recently Ali has taken to music also.  He enjoys preparing students of schools and colleges for dance competitions.

“Because I have learned dance and because I love Puranas will I become a non-Muslim?  Dance is not against any religion.  It is an exalted art form.  It belongs to all men”, says Ali.
