COLLEGE DROPOUT’S CONTRIBUTION TO SPACE RESEARCH

A youth with only Pre-Degree as his academic qualification has discovered the formula to calculate the exact path of planets around the sun.  This formula, which has been eluding the concerted efforts of scientists and mathematicians for the last 400 years, has now been accepted by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) and will soon be published by the American Mathematical magazine.

Meet U.N.Lovelijan of Puthenveettil, Oorappankattil, Kizhakkekkara, Muvattupuzha, the young mathematician whose finding can have important application in Space and Missile technology.

He initially approached ISRO, Thiruvananthapuram with his formula, which was subjected to computer simulation at the VSSC Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram.  As the experiment proved successful, he approached Dr. Viswanathan of Defence Science Centre, New Delhi.  It was Dr. Viswanathan who led him to Bharatharatna Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam.  Dr. Kalam was so amazed by the findings of the youth the he encouraged Lovelijan to continue his research.

Lovelijan had discontinued his studies due to acute financial problems at home.  For ensuring that financial burden should not hamper his work, Dr. Kalam has asked National Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory, Kakkanad, Ernakulam to provide Lovelijan whatever books are needed for the research.  He has also been permitted to use the facilities of Space Research Centres at Pune and Bangalore.

Meanwhile, an attempt to appoint him in Defence Establishment could not materialize for the technical reason that the young mathematician did not have a University Degree.

With encouragement from Dr. Kalam and the Defence Department, Lovelijan is expanding his area of research.

This bachelor of 35 has two brothers and two sisters.
