INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE PRIZE FOR MALAYALI STUDENT

For the second consecutive year, a Malayali has bagged the international prize for the best research paper in Physics for school students, constituted by the Warsaw-based Polish Academy of Science.  Both times, Manu Vaisakh, a student of 10th standard at Bhavan’s Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara, Ernakulam District has been the proud winner of the prize called ‘First Step to Nobel Prize’.

His prize-winning paper was based on the study of changes in light rays as they pass through certain liquids.  Previous year he had won the prize for his work on measurement of pressure using optic fibre.

The 14-year old Manu had done the experiments in the Photonics Department of Cochin University and the lab in his house Esavasyam at Changampuzha Nagar, Edappally, Ernakulam.

The prize includes citation by the Academy and few research publications.

Manu’s paper was chosen this year from 216 entries from 33 countries including 45 from India.  This contest by the Polish Academy is meant for students below 20 years.

Manu’s father Dr. V.P.N. Namboodiri is Professor at Photonics Department of Cochin University while his mother Dr. N.G. Devaki is Professor of Hindi in the same University.
