 TEAM OF TWO

How many pairs of hands does it take to build a house?  Thirty?  Perhaps fifty?  Or can just two pairs of hands do it?

This is precisely what P.K.Prasad of Pokkathilchirayil, Ayamanam, Kottayam, a constable with Railway police and his wife Satiyamma have done.

Their two-storied 700 sq.ft. RCC house (see Photo of House) was built entirely by themselves.  The two worked day and night to complete it in 4 years.  Right from excavation for foundation to earth filling, masonry work, manufacturing of cement and sand bricks, concreting, plastering etc the couple did the entire job themselves.

The only exception was the woodwork.

Prasad had only determination and small withdrawals from LIC and PF to give shape to his dream of owning a house.  And his wife Satiyamma and sons Rahul and Rohit readily joined him in realizing the dream.

Colleagues recollect with praise how Prasad used to do the construction work after duty hours even beyond the midnight.  If the duty was during nighttime, he used to toil during the daytime at the construction site.

Thus with everyday incremental effort, the couple did it finally when the house was ready for occupation after 4 years of labour.

The Lions Club had selected Prasad as the best policeman in Kottayam town earlier when he was with the Traffic Police.  His father Govindan Kesavan, residing with him was a constant source of inspiration for Prasad.
