ELDERLY COUPLE WHO OFFER FOOD TO POOR PATIENTS

Henry Mathew and Ethamma, Chertala, Alappuzha

For many years now, an elderly couple visits Thaluk Hospital, Chertala every evening.  They bring 25 food packets and distribute them to the poor patients.

Henry Mathew and Ethamma are the couple engaged in this act of charity.

Ethamma retired as Head Nurse after 21 years of service at Medical College, Alappuzha.  And Hendry Mathew retired as clerk from N.C.John Company, Alappuzha.  It was Ethamma’s encounter with a teenaged TB patient that set them on the track of helping poor patients.

This patient at the Medical College, Soji, begged Ethamma for some food and a blanket.  Seeing her pitiable condition, Ethamma nursed her back to health and normal life.  Even now, once in a while, Soji comes to visit her favourite nurse.

It was Soji’s hunger and misery that prompted Ethamma to help the needy to the best of one’s efforts.

Except on Saturdays and Sundays, the elderly couple comes to the hospital with food on all other days.  For them this is not a daily burden but a chance to be of help to others.
