CARDAMOM PLANTER WINS RECOGNITION

The Malayali planter who had developed high yielding ‘Njallani Green Gold’ cardamom has been nominated to the Asia-Pacific Study Group by the International Cardamom Growers’ Conference.

Reji of Kattappana, Idukki is the farmer who has been bestowed with this distinction.

Earlier the Science and Technology Department, Government of India had awarded him Rs. 1 lakh for developing the breed.

The new breed has become the hope of cardamom cultivators.  The ‘Njallani’ is the highest yielding variety of cardamom developed so far.

Incidently, ‘Njallani’ is the name of his house.  His guide in matters agricultural is his father Sebastian who had migrated from Kozhuvanal, Pala to the High Ranges three decades back.

It was at the International Conference held in Chennai that he had been nominated to the Study Group.  72 participants from Indonesia, Nepal, Malaysia, Rome, Cambodia, Philippines etc had attended the conference.
