SERVICE CORNER: SELF-EMPLOYMENT FOR REEJA |
||||||||
|
Reeja’s
example points to the potential of self-employment in service sector. A
graduate with B.Com and HDC as qualifications, Reeja, Thayyila Kadavu,
Manjeri, Malappuram, was an unemployed sitting at home, when
neighbours used to come with the request: “will you help us in filling
up this application form?” That
set her thinking: why not start an agency offering such services to the
needy? When she mentioned the
idea to husband, he was appreciative. So
she approached neighbours with the offer to take their electricity bills
to the utility’s office for payment.
She proposed a service charge of Rs.5.
After all that was the bus fare to and from the Electricity
Board’s office. And so many
families willingly agreed. Thus
2 years ago she commenced work with 45 clients.
Later she started an agency at Chelari.
Now her clients number 600. Filling
up of applications forms of various kinds is another service offered by
her agency, Soorya Service Corner. For this the agency charges Rs.2 per application.
There are many in Manjeri who need these services. The
service corner has STD booth, Photostat and screen-printing facilities.
“Rs.750
is the rent of this shop. After taking into account this and the traveling expenses, we
get a reasonable amount as profit. Isn’t
it better than sitting at home?”, she asks.
