SUMAN: REHABILITATION CENTRE FOR MENTALLY ILL WOMEN |
||||||||
|
A
day care center devoted to the rehabilitation of mentally ill women, ‘Suman’
is an organization started with the enthusiasm of a few doctors as its
main capital. It
started functioning in 1997 in a rented building at Chalappuram,
Kozhikkode. The only aid
it gets is from Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, which gives them Rs.5000 per
month. Incidentaly this is
the 1st instance of the Bhavan offiering aid to such a venture. In
the Centre the patients are given training in vegetable cultivation,
notebook and pickle making,
preparation of covers for hospitals and medical stores, creation of
baby’s cloths etc. In
addition to these vocational courses they take part in yoga, music
therapy, newspaper reading and games. The
Centre ministers to patients below 50 years of age.
On Fridays, there is free clinic too. A
patient’s parents once expressed their helplessness thus: “We wish
that our child should die before us.”
It was this sentiment that prompted the starting of ‘Suman’,
says Dr.Valsala, head of the Centre. ‘Suman’
gets technical assistance from NIMHANS, Bangalore.
