GIANT EDIBLE MUSHROOMS OF MUTHALAMADA |
||||||||
|
Edible mushrooms weighing up to 9kg and often as big as a small umbrella – these rarities grow on their own in the paddy fields of Chandrasekharan, Kavil Veettil, Muthalamada, Palakkad. Though
very tasty, these mushrooms are quite hard.
And so they have to be sliced into small pieces while cooking –
either as a fried item or as a gravy-type curry. These
giant mushrooms are seen only in a few localities.
They take 15 days to attain full size and will last for 3 or 4 days
even if not kept in the fridge. Even
after rainy seasons they will grow as long as there is moisture in the
soil. Heavy downpour and hot
summers aren’t suitable for their growth. Chandrasekharan’s
son Jyothilal is exploring the possibility of developing these white
giants scientifically. Chandrasekharan with the mushrooms
