In September 1971, at the age of 24, S.Hariharan, Aluva faced the turning point of his life.  The young man, then an upcoming vocalist and harmonist, met with an accident at workplace that severed both his hands at the elbow.

“Who would want to live with 2 stumps below the shoulders?  But to commit suicide also, one needed someone’s help,” he says about those dark days.

But during this time he realized that his life was meant for music and music was what destiny had left him as compensation.  He underwent extensive training under various masters of carnatic music and read the authoritative texts in Tamil, Telugu, Sanskrit and English.

A bright light came into his life when Nirmala, an employee of the Postal Department, threw away her job to become his life partner.

In 1984 he started Sariga Sangeethalaya, a music school at his home with 20 students.  Today it is the only institute in Kerala authorized to conduct various exams of the 100-year-old All India Gandharva Vidya Mandal.

In 1994, he won the awards of Kerala Sangeetha Academy and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations.  He is the only musician from Kerala authorized by the Cultural Affairs Department, Government of India to perform and demonstrate the ‘mantra-tantra’ works of Muthuswami Deekshitar.

His effort at music therapy, which resulted in the curing of a dumb girl Sangeetha, has won wholesome praise of the doctors of Indian Medical Association dealing with the subject.  And this girl not only speaks, but sings beautifully too.
