45 autorickshaws with the name ‘Arjun’ emblazed in tricolours ply in Kottayam. And all these second hand vehicles are owned by one individual, Eugin Thomas, a young politician of the city.
Autorickshaws
became imprinted in his mind when as a 7th standard student he
observed his elder brothers drive the three-wheeler in their native
village Ponkunnam. After
shifting to Kottayam in 1994,he purchased the 1st auto in 1996.
The 2nd vehicle was added to his collection in the next
year. Slowly their number
increased to the present strength.
All
these movable possessions have been purchased from second hand market.
His
autos don’t ply at night. After 7 p.m. all the vehicles should reach the shed, he has
instructed the drivers. And
the drivers are selected based on a few stringent conditions: they should
be responsible persons above 35 and teetotalers.
A
devotee of Velankanni Matha and Guruvayoorappan, he goes to both pilgrim
centers every year.
After
the Arjun series reaches 50 numbers he plans to start a 51 number series
of ‘Angitha’ autorickshaws.
