The roots of the lotus plant are anchored in obscurity while the scent of its flowers attracts bees from far and wide. Author
of 27 books in Urdu, Suleikha Hussain lives in the purdah of
unimportance at Kochi, while her readers in North India appreciate
her stories and novels. With
the Urdu she learned in a madrasa in Mattanchery, she started writing
stories on the plight of Muslim women.
Her works were published in magazines from Delhi and later her
books were brought out from Luknow and Delhi.
Among them she is more fond of ‘Rah Akeli’ (The lonely
traveler). “At
the time I wrote my novels, my grandmother did not permit me to include
either my address or photo in the book.
I was like a caged bird”, she says. She
writes about the family life among Muslims.
“Though my stories are suitable for films and TV, unfortunately,
not many people know Urdu,” she says.
Sulekha
who was married at the age of 15 lost her husband 5 years ago.
Now age is hanging heavily on her.
“No one seems to appreciate my effort.
For the last 10 years I couldn’t write anything.
My eyesight and memory have declined,” says the 70-year-old
author.
