Calicut University’s 1st rank in M.A.(Music) has gone to a blind girl, Vanaja, Karotte Koottu House, Thamarakkad, Velliyannoor, Kottayam.  Vanaja, who is the 6th child of a poor goldsmith, Ponnappan Achary, was born blind.

Yet even from the small classes, she used to show excellence in studies.  From 7th standard she had studied at Government High School, Kudamaloor.  Later she joined the Blind School, Olassa.

Vanaja was a rank holder in SSLC, Pre Degree and B.A.  Her sister Nalini too has chosen music as her profession.  After completing her music training at Swathi Thirunal College of Music, she is now engaged as a music teacher at Faith India, Puthen Kurishu.

Vanaja has dedicated her rank to the teachers of Government College, Chittur, where she did her M.A.  She remembers with gratitude the contributions of Laila, Prema and Jalaja.  Another person who was a source of inspiration for her was K.Ashtaman Pillai, a former Kala Prathibha of Calicut University and a born blind.

Like her elder sister, Vanaja too dreams of making music her career.
