LATHA MENON: EDITOR OF BESTSELLER CD ENCYCLOPEDIA |

For the 1 crore plus word digital encyclopedia, ‘Encarta’, Latha Menon from Thrissur is the Executive Editor. Latha
Menon, settled in England, is the editor of the best-selling and
trend-setting encyclopedia on CD-ROM that is redefining the way we access
knowledge and information. She
sailed to England in 1964 at the age of 5.
Later she obtained a degree in astrophysics from Somerville
College, Oxford and did research in the subject.
After working for a few years in a teaching assignment, she joined
the Blackwell Scientific Publications as an editor. The
next step in her career was becoming the senior editor of science and
technology at Oxford University Press. It was from here that she joined the Microsoft Encarta
project in 1994. She
points out 2 reasons for the essential attractiveness of CD-ROM encyclopedia:
interactivity and hyperlinks. Though
dealing in digitalware, she believes that there is no replacement to
books. “The scent of new
books, eye-pleasing size of fonts, colour of paper, satisfaction of
underlining etc. cannot be got from any e-book,” she says.
