For
her efforts towards development of a village and the uplift of its women,
the villagers’ ‘chechi’ has been conferred the ‘Vijay Rattan’
award instituted by India International Friendship Society. Ramani
P.Nair, a member of Thiruvananthapuram District Panchayat is the
winner of this title which had earlier been conferred on personalities
like Mother Theresa, B.D.Jetty and M.Fathima Beevi. While
still a student of Pre-Degree in 1975, Ramani was successful in organizing
the women in her native village Kattakkal near Venjarammoodu to
form the ‘Yuvarasmi Mahila Samaj’. She later became the president of the Samaj and has been
occupying that post for the past 23 years. The
Samaj tries to create awareness about sanitation and family planning among
women. It helps women find
self-employment and trains them on the job.
By bringing all the families of the village under the Samaj, she
was able to bring laurels to the Samaj many times at the State level. Under
the leadership of the Samaj, they were able to form the 1st
Women’s Cooperative Society at Taluk level. With
her relentless efforts, she was able to obtain financial assistance to the
tune of Rs.10 lakhs from KAPART for the construction of
Kattakkal-Kottukunnam road. This
4 km road became the pathway of progress for the total development of the
village. In
1987 she became a member of the Grama Panchayat.
In 1995 she became its vice-president.
