At 17 he lost a limb in an accident but went on to demonstrate many daring feats on cycle and motorcycle as the ‘leg training instructor’ of Indian Army.  K.N.Krishnankutty Menon (63), who thus installed confidence in many physically handicapped persons has now settled down at ‘Ananda Kuteer Divine Life Society’, Kannanthodath lane, Edappally, Kochi and is leading a contented retired life.

If his feats and presence were an inspiration for many in the army, his life at Kochi is a broadening of his compassion and love.  For Menon is a lover of animals and it is in this capacity that many of his neighbours, both human and animal, know him.

Riding on his bicycle, he brings fish and meat for the cats and dogs in his lane.  The cycle bell is an invitation for the animals that line up at the gates for their benefactor.

Bachelor Menon gathers ‘prasad’ from the nearby temple in the morning and feeds a portion of it to the crows.  Next is the turn of the 4 cats at his home.  He eats his share in the company of these cats.  Next he feeds the squirrels. He then goes to the pond where the fishes come up on hearing his footsteps.  The tortoises have to be taken in hand and fed.  By this time the lizards would have queued up on the wall.  For each of them he gives a grain of rice.

After bath he returns for meditation when this disciple of Swami Sivananda Saraswathi recites self-composed mantras for the welfare of humanity.

“Even now I can ride motorcycles and cycles along the steps”, he says.
