“It is not disability that matters.  Rather, it is the abilities in each person that I count.  And truly speaking, who is disabled? And who is not?”

That is Jayasree Raveendran, explaining her concept of handicapped or disabled.  Jayasree, who is deaf, runs the ‘Ability Foundation’, Chennai, a voluntary organization to guide the disabled.

She resigned from the post of senior executive in a well-known computer firm to start the foundation.  Earlier, she was a lecturer at IGNOU and editor of its international journal.  She started her career as a creative artist in an advertising agency.

Jayasree is a good veena artist as well as an accomplished dancer.  Recently her foundation organized a dance programme where 2 blind dancers performed together with well-known artists Vineeth ad Revathi.

For more than an hour, Bussa Gowda and Guru Prasad danced with the famous artists without any flaw or the slightest hesitation.  Those who watched the performance were spellbound by the ability of the duo to create such a rich tapestry of rhythm based on their mental images.

The foundation publishes ‘Ability’, which is meant to bridge the gap between the physically handicapped and others.  Another project is teaching computer to the deaf.  Both neglect and misplaced compassion are reprehensible to the disabled, she says.  What they need is encouragement and inspiration.

Jayasree lost he hearing ability after a fall from the swing at the age of 5.  But that did not deter her from obtaining M.A, M.Litt, B.Ed and M.S with first class or distinction.
