21-year-old LLB student Smitha who saved her mother from being run over by the train has been awarded national bravery award, Jeevan Raksha Pathak. The
incident occurred on January 23, 2001 when Smitha and her mother Vasantha
were walking across a railway crossing at Kollam.
As one train pulled away, the waiting travelers
- including mother and daughter – surged forward, not knowing
that a goods train was fast approaching along the adjacent track. Seeing
the train, the commuter – including Smitha – ran to the other side.
But Vasantha fell down on the track and was unable to get up. While
others stood transfixed at the imminent tragedy, Smitha rushed to her
mother and in the snatch of a moment pulled her out of danger.
Just then the train screeched past the dazed duo.
