LACE MAKING AT IRAVIPURAM: CONTINUING A PORTUGESE TRADITION BEYOND 4 CENTURIES |
||||||||
|
The people of Iravipuram village near Kottiyam, Kollam carry on a Portugese tradition, centuries after the foreigners have left its boundaries. From grandmothers to teenagers, they have converted the art of lace making into an income-generating venture under the Women’s Cooperative Society, Iravipuram. The
Portugese stayed at Iravipuram during 1515 – 1544.
The technique of lace making learned from them has been transmitted
through generations to the present day. On
a circular pillow made of wooden plank, coconut husk and jute bag, a
patterned cardboard binding is kept. On this sharp needles are struck. Around these needles, using cotton thread, the exquisite
laces are woven. These
laces, when stitched onto white cloths, become export commodity worth many
dollars. There
are different types of laces like ‘lining for ready-made cloths’,
table cloths, table mat, pillow covers, kerchief, design works for collars
of lady’s and children’s wear etc. The
cooperative society makes laces in many designs as per order.
