HORTICULTURE THERAPY AT MENTAL REHABILITATION CENTRE |
||||||||
|
If students of any high school were to cultivate vegetables and bring in a profit of Rs.5000, it would be worth commenting. But if the students happen to be those whose mental faculties have been challenged, then the success story is all the more delicious. Students aged between 4 and 15, studying at the C.H.Muhammed Koya Memorial State Institute for Mental Rehabilitation, Pangappara, Sreekariyam, Thiruvananthapuram have achieved this sweet result after their efforts in the field of the Centre. Cultivating vegetables for the centre or making profits was not the primary motive. Rather it was part of their treatment called horticulture therapy. The students had cultivated vegetables like spinach, chilly, snake gourd, bitter gourd etc. Dr. Philipose, on deputation from Department of Social Welfare, Government of India, is coordinating the students’ horticulture efforts. Under the leadership of the students a nursery for saplings of anthuriam, orchid etc is also functioning. Students in their farm
