SITARAM: PAINTER OF MORE THAN 700 PORTRAITS OF DEITIES FOR CALENDARS |
||||||||
|
His works on gods and goddesses grace the calendars one would see in the drawing rooms of many houses. From the age of 7, when he started painting, to the present, when he is 74, he has painted more than 700 pictures of divine figures for calendars. Sitaram,
‘Ram Nivas’, Kumarapuram, Palakkad, learned the basics of painting
from his father Sreenivasa Iyer (Nanu Nambi).
In 1945, after passing School Final, he took up painting with
renewed interest. In 1965
Srinivasa Iyer and family shifted to Srivalliputhoor near Sivakasi.
It was then that the commercial possibilities of his talent opened
up to him. He
started painting for the calendars being mass-produced at Sivakasi.
Besides, he started doing portrait work also. For
the next 21 years he stayed at Sivakasi, enriching the printed calendar
every year. Next he moved to
Madurai for 4 years before returning to Palakkad. The
boundaries of religion or creed do not fetter him.
His brush has painted Ayyappan and Guruvayoorappan as meticulously
as it has painted Jesus Christ and St.George.
The most often done pictures are those of Ayyappan and
Guruvayoorappan, who are his favourite deities. While
a portrait demands 1½ months of his time, he finishes a calendar-picture
in 2 weeks. Even
now Sitharam is active in the field of lines and colours.
