FARMER OF VARIETY WHO MARKETS THE PRODUCTS HIMSELF |
||||||||
|
The variety of crops he cultivates and the marketing strategy he adopts differentiate young farmer V.K.Padmanabhan, Vadakkekkara, Padinjattumuri, Kadangod, Thrissur from others. The
crops in his 13-acre land include ‘koorkka’ and jasmine besides
coconut, arecanut, tapioca, coffee, pepper and vegetables. The
cultivation of 'koorkka', rice and vegetables in that order does good to
the soil in terms of nutrients and aeration. For
conservation of water he has resorted to drip and sprinkler irrigation.
Drip irrigation is done for bitter gourd, jasmine and peas, which
require comparatively less water. Padmanabhan
started jasmine cultivation 8 years ago.
During January-February 100 plants produce 2 kg of flowers while at
other times the yield is 300 gm. 1
kg of flower fetches Rs.200 in the market and a plant yields flowers for
15-20 years. He
has shown diversity in marketing the products also.
Though earlier he used to sell the products at the common market,
he later opened a shop near his house.
Another venture of his is the mobile vegetable shop.
On alternate days he takes vegetables to 25 or so regular customers
along the Thuppilisseri -
Pazhanichantha route. Last
year Padmanabhan was selected best farmer in Vadakkancherry Block.
