ENGINEERS DEVELOP DIGITAL SUBTITLING PROGRAMME FOR FILMS |
||||||||
|
Providing subtitles to feature films used to be a laborious task of one month involving an expense of up to Rs. 1.5 lakhs. Not any more. The digital subtitling programme developed by K. Asok Kumar and M.Ramachandran can accomplish the task with 10% of that time and amount. The
subtitling they did for Girish Kasaravally film, ‘Dweepa’, screened at
the International Film Festival, Thiruvananthapuram had them catapulted to
unexpected stardom at the mela. In
the earlier procedure, the subtitle was superimposed on the print of the
film. But in the new method
developed by the due, the subtitle is projected on to the screen in
synchronization with the movie. But
the viewer will not be able to distinguish the difference. An
advantage of the process is that the same print can be screened either
with or without the subtitle. Another
advantage is that once a digital subtitle is made in one language, one
doesn’t even need the print to create subtitle of the film in another
language. The
software developed by them can take care of power failure during
screening, reel changing or rupture of print etc. Asok
Kumar is Registrar of C-DIT, Thiruvananthapuram while Ramachandran is the
Director of Om Media Vision, Thiruvananthapuram.
Ramachandran had earlier developed the graphic display system for
live telecast of election and budget presentations in the Doordarshan. Sample digital subtitle
