For the poor patients and their bystanders coming to Medical College, Kottayam, ‘Karunya Nilayam’ is a comforting presence. Providing
free porridge for lunch is an activity that the organization has been
doing since the last 4 years. In additions, it distributes free medicines worth Rs.80,000
per month to the needy and poor. All
that the patients have to do is to show the admission card and
prescription slip. The
6-story new building of the organization, now nearing completion, is
intended for another purpose also. “It envisages free boarding and lodging for 60 persons
coming to the Medical College,” says Fr.E.K.George, Vice President of
the Nilayam. “Donations
from educational institutions under ‘Cancer Relief Aid Fund’ and
contributions from individuals help in the growth of the organization.
We have plans to find a sponsor a day for our noon-meal scheme
also,” says Fr.Thomas Kurien, Secretary of the abode. The
Nilayam has collected a data bank of persons willing to donate blood.
In case of emergency, one could approach the organization for
blood. They have planned to
start an ambulance service also. “We
try to ameliorate the suffering of cancer patients.
Early detection, counseling for critical patients and so on are out
concerns”. Distributing medicines to patients Courtesy: T.S.Preetha (text), Razak Kottakkal (photo), Vanitha, December 15-31, 1998 Contributed by: Administrator |
