VISWANATHAN: MAKING PAPER PULP FIGURES OF CULTURAL ICONS
Viswanathan, Chirathara House, East Appangad, Njaarakkal, Vypin, Ernakulam

As a sculptor, he would consider it easier to work on large figures.  To give expression to the faces of tiny figures isn’t easy, he knows.  But, Viswanathan of Njaarakkal, Vypin has chosen the medium of paper pulp to create tiny sculptures of social and cultural figures like Gandhiji, Sukumar Azhikkode, Yesudas, Kunjunnimash etc.

The first paper pulp figure he moulded was the 10-inch figure of Kunjunnimash.  Later he completed the other figures also.  He uses chalk power for finishing work before painting the figure.  It takes him about two weeks to complete a figure.

A recipient of the best teacher award by the State, this is not his first notable creation.  In 1983, he had won the first prize in the state level painting competition.  He did his diploma in painting from RLV Arts College, Thrippunithura.  After that he joined the teaching profession in government school and retired recently.  The sculptures he did in the premises of the schools where he worked, have had notable acclaim.
