DR.A.M.RANJITH: DEVELOPING DEVICE TO EASE PLUCKING OF FRUITS | ||||
|
A worker,
frustrated by the attempt to pluck fruits high up on the trees, may resort to
stone or muscle power to solve the problem temporarily. But an academician may think different. He may explore the ways to simplify the task
at hand. Such a task
presented itself to Dr. A.M.Ranjith, former professor of Kerala Agricultural
University, when he had to pluck jack fruits at home. The strain of holding long poles affected the
shoulders and once the jack fruit fell on one of his collegues. So he mulled
over the issue and came up with a device that lessened the strain on the
shoulders. It is so easy to operate that
even children would find the task child’s play. It is
created on the principle of dynamic fulcrum, which allows the pole to be
rotated 3600. After creating a
prototype and testing it, Dr. Ranjith took the next prudent step of patenting it. According to him, the cost of its production
would be around 500 to 1000 rupees. It
can be made locally, but one has to be careful not to use conducting material,
he cautions. Vidya Raja
