YATHEENDRA DAS: INNOVATING A CYCLE THAT CAN TRAVEL IN WATER | ||||||
|
A cycle to pedel one across troubled waters where no bridge exists: the aquatic cycle devised by Yatheendra Das, Sea Angel, Mannur Rail, Kadalundy, Malappuram can also double up as an aid to a leisurely tourist. It was the knowledge gained from involvement with speed boat and semi-submarine manufacture in Chennai and Abu Dhabi that gave him the idea to innovate such a vehicle. The cycle, which can seat two persons, can also carry half-a-ton of weight also. The key part of the vehicle is the foam-filled fibre-glass wheel. Since foam has been filled even in the steel framework, there is no fear of the cycle sinking in water. It can be moved forward or backward using the pedel. He made a satisfactory prototype after experimenting for 1½ years. He has already manufactured four such units, which were snapped up by film production units from Chennai and Hyderabad. As part of the Onam festival, a demonstration of the cycle was held in the Chaliyar river. While the guests praised his noteworthy innovation, no further help has been forthcoming for obtaining it the fitness certificate. He rues that if he had made such an invention in a neighbouring state, then the authorities would have been more than enthusiastic about giving necessary help to develop it further. Meanwhile, he continues to innovate with fibre glass made biogas plant, ornamental sunshades and columns for houses etc.
