When homoeopath Hari met young Binu at Wayanad, the lad was literally on his knees, as he was suffering from Brittle Bone disease that would crack a victim’s bones even for such small efforts as a sneeze or a laugh.  But the brave boy was facing the challenge by penning poems.

From Dr.Hari, Latha, an  official of Matsyafed from Thiruvananthapuram came to know about Binu.  Urged by inexplicable promptings she visited Wayanad and endeared herself to the victim as his elder sister.  She posted his poems on the blog.  Reading them prompted Dhana, a software professional from Bangalore to contact the duo.  She too was suffering from the disease but was facing life with a lot of confidence.

Slowly the circle of kind hearted people increased and they decided to start an organization.  And Amritha Varshini, their venture was born 10 years ago.

The organisation makes effort to bring those suffering from Brittle Bone Disease under the umbrella of their care.   “We teach them to do simple tasks: making umbrellas, paper bags, ornaments etc. Most of them are interested in drawings.  We conduct their exhibitions and distribute the profit to them.”

These talents are showcased in their website, amrithavarshini.org

There are now about 40 members in Amritha Varshini.  Besides, many volunteers come forward to help them.  College students also come forward to contribute their mite.

The Brittle Bone patients do not require sympathy.  What they need is love and a little happiness.  And those behind Amritha Varshini are ever ready to do that.
