SURESH: MAKING A BUSINESS OUT OF DOG HOSTELS | ||||||
|
Many would have doubted the sanity of Suresh in resigning a permanent job in Mathrubhumi Daily to take up – hold your breath – rearing dogs. But seeing him serving the dogs and their masters with gusto, and making a profession out of his passion, one would have to admit that he had made the right choice. Even as a child he was fascinated by the loyal friend of man. Being a neighbour of police officer Jayaram Padikkal, he had developed a liking for the intelligent beasts. With the money received for the festival of Vishu, he purchased his first Labrador. Jayaram Padikkal himself introduced the boy to other like-minded dog-lovers and this facilitated the rearing of puppies. Since then he was an earning member of the family. Love of dogs curtailed his education with SSLC, just as it cut short his career in Mathrubhumi. It was 15 years ago that Suresh initiated a dog hostel in the capital city. This was meant as a safe haven where owners going out of station could leave their pet for the time being. Suresh was the perfect surrogate parent for these pets. Incidentally, Defence Minister A.K.Antony’s wife Elizabeth could think of only Suresh while deciding to leave their German Shepherd in Kerala while they went to Delhi. Soon Suresh branched into another venture: training puppies to understand the owners’ commands. At the end of the training, the dogs would become proud companions of the owners. As the next act of diversification, he started the ‘dog exchange’ where sellers and buyers could do their deals. As another innovation, he arranges to deliver ‘dog biriyani’ as per order to the pets at home. The transportation of dogs, their club registration, Muncipal Corporation license etc are other fields where his service is available. The backing of expert veterinarians adds to the success of his venture.
