The waste of one process is raw material for another.  Biogas plant works on this principle.  And now an innovator has modified the standard biogas plant to incorporate aesthetics, portability and ease of use.  The plant devised by Balachandran.V, Mecheri House, Varavoor, Thrissur is a fixed roof type made using plastic water tanks available in the market.

Traditional floating roof model suffers from bad odour, mosquito menace and worms.  However, its improvement, the fixed roof model using concrete or brick, lacks portability.  Balachandran improves upon this model.

The system has a split gas storage unit that helps to store excess gas.  This helps to detect the gas without lighting the stove.  A stirrer is added to eliminate incomplete digestion of waste that could result in foul smell.

A 500 litre unit with a single burner stove costs Rs.9000.  With waste from a 5 member family, the unit can generate sufficient gas to burn the stove for 1½ hours daily.
