The American children of Hawaii call him Dr.V.  Perhaps the shortened name of Dr.Vinod is apt considering that he is into nanotechnology, something that deals with matter at the minute size.  And he is the favourite of the children because of the popularity of his 10 minute science programme for the Hawaii State Television every Tuesday.

If he was earlier in the limelight for making the tiny carbon nano brush along with Ajayan Pulikkal, a leader in this field, this time he has come out with nano concrete, a product that requires little cement and at the same time can give considerable strength.  What is more, this additive can self-seal cracks and voids in concrete.

NASA has selected nano concrete as one of the 50 notable inventions that can have revolutionary impact on the world.  ‘Liquid Web’, as the product has been christened, consists of carbon nano tubes in liquid base that detects and fills voids and cracks.  Dr.Vinod, who works for a research institute, ‘Oceanit’ says the commercial product will be available in two years time.

Dr.P.V.Vinod, who hails from Ramanthali in Kannur District, did his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from Government Engineering College, Kannur.  He went on to do his masters in Material Science from Atlanta University, Florida, USA and Ph.D from University of Hawaii in Honolulu.
