Providing free coaching school students to be proficient in written and spoken English has been a labour of love for Joshy Jose, a teacher in the S.V.U.P.School, Karippal, Kannur since 1994. He engages special classes for students of the school from 5th standard onwards.
Further, he conducts additional classes in Sreekandapuram, Pollakkad and Perumpadavu during weekends. In each centre, more than 100 students attend the classes. Besides, he handles an English teaching programme on the local TV channels of the region.
He believes that the main hurdle before rural students is the lack of understanding of tenses. He teaches these to the students, first in Malayalam and then explains the same in English. It is his experience that this has been effective. According to him, students are able to speak and read English in two years.
He has brought out a CD for easy learning of the language.
