The biomass cooking oven designed by Jayaprakash.V, a traditional chulha maker from Kozhikode has won the Kerala State Energy Conservation Award-2008 in the category Research and Innovation.  And according to the Energy Management Centre (EMC) citation, his device with a fuel efficiency of 37.6% is well ahead of the 5% efficiency of the ‘Priyagni’ stove developed by the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Sources.

His finding was also certified by the Agency for Non-Conventional Energy and Rural Technology (ANERT).  According to him, the smoke-free stove is based on a two-tier burning process.

Jayaprakash, who has designed more than 4000 domestic and 700 community chulhas says that a portable form of the stove which weighs around 8 kg can be produced for less than Rs.1000.

What is fuel-efficient is also environmental-friendly.  Thus his stove would be a blessing for the purse and the lungs.

40-year-old Jayaprakash is now busy with patent registration formalities.
