25 years ago, 16 persons started the Model Free Study Centre at Perunelli, Thiruvananthapuram with the lofty ideal to provide free tuition to students from Class 1 to 10. Over the years more than 15000 students have availed the free bounty of knowledge provided by the Centre. This is at a time when many Tuition Centres charge Rs.250 to 500 per month from school students.
At present there are about 400 students on the rolls of the Centre. According to Principal Kunjumon, the Centre conducts seminars, discussions, photo exhibition, quiz as well as sports and cultural festivals and awards certificates to the students.
The Centre, which runs two shifts per day, functions in a rented premise. The frugal existence of the Centre forces it to persist with thatched roof. And because of this kind of roof, the Electricity Board has refused to provide power connection to the Centre.
