Veteran farmer K.R.Kuriakose of Cheerakuzhy, Palakkad has demonstrated at his homestead yet another innovation, this time in the use and conservation of waste water.  He has produced paddy in his home farm in the highland area with waste water.

Water from the bathroom and kitchen is collected in a headpond along with rainwater.  This water is used in a field of 30 cents prepared out of a patch of dry land and readied with organic manure.  The water in the headpond is used for the paddy cultivation.  According to him, each family can develop a paddy garden just like a vegetable garden.  And this will make a big contribution towards food security, he says.

According to him, an average of 500 to 1000 litres of waste water can be collected daily from a house and this will make the pond a permanent reservoir.

Kuriakose has to his credit the national award for development of ‘young bud’ rubber plants in 2005 and Karshakashree award in 1998 for inter-crop farming.  He had cultivated pineapple and gram as intercrop in rubber plantations.  He has taken up several innovative practices in farming.

With the experience of more than half-a-century of farming, the 75-year-old farmer points to a simple solution to a seemingly difficult task.
