Cold is often equated to barren, but the desolate fields of Antarctica hide in its white sheets of ice many secrets of the evolution of climate across historical times.  And Maitreyi, the Indian research base set up there, has been unearthing ice cores whose secrets are being analysed in the field and in the Ice Lab at Goa for these facts.  Founder of the Ice Lab at the National Centre for Antarctic and Ocean Research, Goa and the team leader for the recent expedition to Antarctica has been Dr.Thamban Meloth from Kasaragod.

The team has been able to retrieve core samples drilled from Antarctica and bring them back to the Ice Lab for further analysis there.

Dr.Thamban did his Pre Degree and Degree from Govt.College, Kasaragod and Post Graduation in Marine Geology from CUSAT.

He has been the recipient of many national and international awards which include Young Scientist Award’, by START (IGBP), USA and Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA), Japanese, German and Swiss Fellowships etc.  He won an award from the Ministry of Earth Science for setting up the Ice Lab.
