P.P.PADMANABHAN: SCHOOL TEACHER COMPILES BOOK ON BIRD NESTS OF KERALA | ||||||
|
“Rare”. This is the headline of the preface written by novelist C.Radhakrishnan to the book, ‘Bird Nests of Kerala’ by P.P.Padmanabhan a teacher of Government Higher Secondary School, Kunhimangalam, Payyannoor, Kannur and published by Kerala Bhasha Institute. And it sums up the unique effort of this nature-lover who has painstakingly compiled the architectural habits of 57 varieties of birds of Kerala. Once while teaching English in the 10th standard, he had to explain how scientist Jerald Durrel was thrilled when one day he received a weaver bird’s nest by mail. Soon afterwards, M.M.Arya, a student of this class brought him a bird’s nest obtained from her home. Incidently, that too was a weaver bird’s nest. That was the beginning of Padmanabhan’s quest for bird nests. While strolling with friends, his eyes would invariably be searching for birds nests in nooks and corners. Once he locates the nest, he would observe the same using binoculars and wait till the young ones come of age and leave the nest. He would then carefully take down the nest and note down its characteristics. He used to share his observation with the public through exhibitions, melas etc. It was at such an exhibition by school students that scientist-novelist C.Radhakrishnan noted the efforts of Padmanabhan. “Although Padmanabhan was not present there that day, I could not refrain from congratulating him,” writes the novelist. And this appreciation culminated in the preface to the book, which is being planned to be brought out in English also.
