Workers with a grouse in Japan work overtime, while workers with similar perceived grievances here will go on strike.  In an exception to this generalization, the employees belonging to the Kerala Muncipal and Corporation Staff Union worked all over Kerala on June 9, 2007, even though it was a Second Saturday and hence a holiday for Government employees.

The union had earlier tried it on an experimental basis in Thiruvananthapuram district last month.  The success of that effort prompted them to expand the practice across the State.

According to K.Jayadevan, general secretary of the union, “Time-bound clearance of files can curb corruption to a large extent.  It is file backlogs which make agents thrive in municipalities.”

As the union had made announcements well in advance, a lot of people came to the offices to avail the services on that day.  Mayors, Muncipal Chairmen and other elected representatives were present to lend a helping hand.

The union proposed to continue the reform.  “Power for the people, employees with the people,” it says.
