A simple device that can solve a big problem: the gadget invented by Simon George Palamoottil, Perumbadavu helps to spray pesticides to the top of arecanut trees suffering from bud rot disease.  He felt the need for such a device rose from the shortage of climbers to do the spraying.

The Rs.40-device consists of a thin bamboo pole with sprayer fitted on one end and a control on the other that is connected to the sprayer’s handle by a metal wire.  Together with the sprayer it would cost about Rs.150.  Using the device one could treat 400 trees per hour and there would be no wastage of insecticide.  Though the device is simple, it has been calculated that it could reduce the cost of spraying in one hectare from Rs.3000 to Rs.450.

This is not the first innovation of Simon.  Earlier he had devised a funnel shaped apparatus for filling poly-bags for planting rubber saplings faster than the conventional way.  A fibre-sheet based device to help farmer from wagging of tail by cows while milking is another innovation of his.

His latest invention drew immediate response from farmers in the area when it was demonstrated at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Panniyur recently.
