Perhaps the first TV channel in the world devoted exclusively for maritime matters – the effort of Sohan Roy hopes to provide info-entertainment to those involved in the seafaring-life worldwide.  The channel was launched in Dubai in May this year by German professor Walter Stov who taught him at the Cochin University.

It views the potential needs of 50000 ships, offshore oil exploration sites, naval vessels, trade, academic circle etc.  The programmes are available from mid-sea ships by using special antenna.  Also, the content is available as webcast.

Sohan, a product of marine engineering from Cochin University came to UAE in 1992.  Within 6 years, he had formed the Aries group that is now active in the consultancy and ship design fields in the Middle East.  Aries are country representatives to many international firms in UAE.

The 100-odd engineers of company own almost 50% of its shares.  The group has diversified into tourism, interior design, testing lab, media etc.  His wife Abhini looks after the interior design.

A keen interested in direction had prompted Sohan to obtain a diploma from Hollywood.  “In fact my greatest desire was to be a director.  I was almost scheduled to work as an assistant under director Kamal in Vishnu Lokam.  However, I could not make it in time,” he reminiscences with a smile.

Although he did not make it to work behind the big screen, he hopes to make his contribution to the small screen.
