|
Order of Canada, that country’s highest civilian award, is conferred in recognition of outstanding lifetime achievement in various fields of human endeavour. Patsy George, hailing from Kochi, has been chosen for this award by an advisory council chaired by the Chief Justice of Canada. She is perhaps the first Malayali to be conferred this honour. Eldest daughter of Pethenpurackal George and Ida of Kochi, she had migrated to Canada in 1960. After obtaining Masters Degree in Social Work from University of Ottawa, she served in various capacities in the British Columbia Government. This included a stint as Director of Multiculturalism and Immigration. A recipient of various awards and accolades, she had a hand in the formulation of the new Child, Family and Community Services Act of British Columbia. An office bearer of many social welfare-related bodies of Canada and North America, she lives in Vancouver with her sister.
