The bravery and presence of mind of an 8th standard student  saved 28 persons including 24 school children from what could have turned out to be a country boat capsizing.

The incident happened at Ayyappan Kavu, Iritti, Kannur.  M.Sabir, a student of Government Higher Secondary School, Aralam was one of the travelers in the boat that was plying from the Puzhakkara bank to the Aralam School side.  Following heavy rains, there was swift current in the river.  As they neared the shore, the swift current foiled the attempt of the ferryman to control the boat.

As the boat drifted downstream and a frightened scream rose from the school children, Sabir jumped into the raging water without a moment’s hesitation.  Following this, the other passengers threw to him the other end of the rope that was tied to the boat.  Sabir swam with the rope to the shore and then pulled the boat to the bank, which was 200m downstream of their destination.

Just in time, for in a few moments the boat would have entered the rapids, leading to its rollover.
