The development of “nano skin” by Prof.Pulikkal M.Ajayan and his team promises to bring to reality, foldable TV and computer screens as well as electronic screens.  Dr.Ajayan of Kodungalloor, who is a professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, USA is a pioneer in the Lilliputian world of nano particles, where distances are measured in one billionth of a metre.

The stumbling block to developing an effective nano skin earlier was the weak bonding between tiny carbon nanotubes.  His solution to overcome the difficulty was to “stick” them in an array on plastic or polymer surface.  When electricity is applied to these tubes, they emit electrons without losing conductivity.  This makes them a potential material for screens of the future.

Earlier Dr.Ajayan had created ripples in the nano-research field by imitating the steely grip of a lizard on the wall using nanotubes.

According to him, one is searching for the simple and the beautiful in science.  And if he hadn’t been a scientist, he would have become a poet or film director, he had said in an earlier interview.
