NARAYANAN: MEDICINAL PLANT CULTIVATION OF FORMER TEACHER | |||||||
|
He is no traditional health practitioner. Yet many in his neighbourhood and few well-known ayurveda medicine manufacturers come to him. For his 3˝-acre land is a veritable garden of medicinal plants. 60-year-old former teacher Kunhikandy Narayanan of Bavote, Peralassery, Kannur, has a collection of more than 200 medicinal plants. ‘Thippali’ for cold, ‘Ankolam’ for rabies, ‘madhuramkolli’ for diabetes, ‘kattar vazha’ and ‘kanjunni’ for abundant growth of hair etc find a place in his cultivation. Other varieties include ‘garudappacha’, ‘ramacham’, ‘sarvasugandhi’, ‘chittaratha’ etc. A winner of the best farmer in Peralassery Panchayat, this teacher runs a government-approved nursery of plants too. Compost made from the cowdung and green leaves in his farm is the main manure that he uses.
