10 years ago, K.K.Said could not maintain his 4-acre land with the yield from arecanut and banana cultivation there.  It was then that he turned to rearing fancy fishes.  Today the same land with arecanut and banana yields about Rs.10000 from the sale of fancy fishes.

10 years ago, after he first read about farming in aquarium fishes, he contacted Fisheries Office at Ponnani.  Based on their technical advice, he started rearing fishes on a scientific basis.

More than a hundred variety of fishes are reared in Said’s farm which consists of 23 ponds and 70 concrete tanks.  Incidently, all the tanks in the farms were constructed by Said and his family.

Arona, a fish in demand among Russians and Chinese and which fetches Rs.1 lakh per pair, is reared here.

His clients come from northern districts of Kerala as well as from Mysore and Ooty.  The breeding fishes are brought from Kolkatta and Chennai.  55-year-old Said is assisted by his grandson Jamsheer.

Many research students from Universities have visited the 2nd standard drop out Said’s farm.
